Best time
Plan your visit around Steam-Up Sundays (second Sunday of each month, May-October) to see the historic Baldwin locomotive and steam engines in operation—this is when the museum truly comes alive, though winter visits still offer restoration shop tours and indoor exhibits.
Visitor tip
Book Railbus ride reservations in advance by calling 530-470-0902, especially for weekend trips April-October. Combine this with the meadow food vendors (ice cream and hot dogs) for a complete experience, and don't miss the snow plow and vintage cars displayed one exit north on the highway—easy to overlook without a docent's guidance.
Visitor tip
Request a docent-led tour when you arrive—visitors consistently praise their knowledgeable staff who provide personalized explanations and can highlight hidden details like the restoration shop operations. Tours are available daily and add significant educational value at no extra cost.
