Best time
Visit on a weekday afternoon (like the reviewer did on a warm September afternoon) to experience the museum with minimal crowds. Even popular times appear to have only 20 visitors, making for a peaceful, personal exploration.
Visitor tip
The collection is eclectic and spread across the large grounds, so take time to wander and explore different buildings. Even if one exhibit doesn't interest you, the variety means you'll likely find something that captures your attention.
Visitor tip
The staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful—don't hesitate to ask them questions or request recommendations on which buildings to prioritize based on your interests, especially given the enormous size of the grounds.

What visitors say
Since my wife is fourth generation Gunnison it was full of memories. The collection is eclectic and somewhat scattered but it is big enough that anyone can find their interest.
We stumbled on the Pioneer Museum as I drove into Gunnison for an overnight stay on a road trip, we had about 2 1/2 hours there before it closed. I was amazed at the amount of wonderful pieces on show, could have had many hours more but…
A mind-boggling collection of historical artifacts. Over 30 builders - you could spend a week here.
